Whats the difference between ATF and CVT gear fluid

A CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) system differs from a normal automatic transmission (ATF system) mainly in the way it changes gears. A CVT uses a belt or chain connected to adjustable pulleys, allowing it to change gear ratios smoothly and continuously without fixed gears. This gives the car smoother acceleration, better fuel economy, and fewer noticeable gear shifts while driving. In contrast, a normal automatic transmission uses fixed gears and a torque converter to change from one gear to another, which is why drivers can usually feel the gear changes during acceleration. CVT systems are commonly found in modern fuel-efficient cars like the Toyota Axio, Honda Fit, and Nissan X-Trail, while traditional ATF automatic systems are common in heavier vehicles and SUVs such as the Toyota Prado and Mitsubishi Pajero because they are generally stronger and better suited for heavy loads. Another major difference is the transmission fluid used: CVTs require special CVT fluid, while traditional automatics use ATF fluids like Dexron or T-IV.
